Alfred James Freeman aka "Uncle Joe", 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Cherry Hill Manor. He was the widower of the late Inez Theresa Freeman who passed away on May 12, 2018. They shared 62 years of marriage together.

Alfred was born on June 11, 1932 in Basseterre, St. Kitts to the late Walter Williams and Miriam Freeman. He was a taxi driver in St. Kitts for almost 30 years until he moved to Rhode Island in 2000. He was not only a funny and hard working driver he was a good friend and loved by many, earning him the nickname "Uncle Joe". He was also an advocate for taxi drivers, petitioning and fighting hard to change the color of taxicab license plates to yellow to differentiate taxis from household vehicles when non taxis were taxiing tourists, cutting into taxi driver's profits. Because of his relentless, "don't take no for an answer" attitude it was granted. So when you visit St. Kitts and see a yellow taxi license plate, remember Uncle Joe.

He was Uncle Joe to many, but he was daddy and grandpa to his family which was a whole village in and of itself. He is survived by his 11 children Conrad "Cutie" Kelly, Joan and her husband, Neptune Pierre, Hyacinth Freeman, Bevan Freeman, Everett and his wife, Beverly Freeman, Bridget "Cora" and her husband, James Rampersant, Patrick "Dave" Freeman, Vernon "Lenbo" and his wife, Jane Freeman, Alfred C. Freeman, Cleon and her husband, Edward B. Kanneh and Kervin and his wife Chrislyn Freeman; his 39 grand children, 40 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; the Freeman Village had a population of 92 people and as he would say "I thank God all is mine." He is also survived by his brothers Curtis, Roy and Osmond Lake; sisters Jezelle Rivers, Roselle Watson and Helger Hubbard. He was predeceased by his brothers Sinclair and Basil Illege and sisters Pearline Freeman, Mildred Williams and Kathleen Freeman. His humor, love, laughter and nicknaming will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

A private funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 11:30am at Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Higginson Ave, Lincoln, RI 02865. Public viewing will be held from 10am - 11:30am.
